Source/Archive record SCH4608 - 1940s RAF Aerial Photographs from Operation Review

This was a national aerial survey flown by the RAF from 1944 (3 Group RAF and then by the newly created RAF Central Photographic Establishment). The photography in was undertaken by 540 and 58 Squadrons using de Havilland Mosquito aircraft. Photography was also undertaken by 541 Squadron; possibly with Avro Lancaster aircraft. The Air Survey Section was disbanded on 31st December 1951. The majority of the western air photographs date from 17th January 1947. Some of the Wirral, Warrington and Macclesfield photographs are from August 1945 and is quite distinctive due to its grade A quality and it is clearly summer time. Its coverage is depicted on the paper flight line plans held by the HER. For the digital mosaic, photographs were sourced from those held by the HER. Photographs and negatives were also sourced from the English Heritage Archive (NMR) at Swindon and possibly another archive (Jarrow?). A lot of sortie 1935 (the shadowy January 1947 sortie) was digitised from original negatives held at the English Heritage Archive (NMR).
