Summary

The site of Nun House Farm which may have been a grange owned by the Benedictine Priory of St Mary's at Chester. The farmstead was demolished prior to the construction of a housing estate in the mid twentieth century.

Nun House: Documentary references from 1554 (le Nunhouse, Nunehouwse), and 1621 (Nunhouse). The nun-house belonging to the Nuns of Chester.

The Benedictine Nunnery of St Mary in Chester was a landowner in Wharton township.

This map depicts a farmstead, comprising a house with a narrow farm building to the north and a further farm building to the east. Named Nun House Farm.

As previously depicted. An opensided building, probably a hay barn, has been added in the north-eastern part of the farmstead.

The farmstead is visible on this aerial photograph. The farm building to the east of the house is no longer extant.

The L shaped pond or ponds depicted on the historic maps (see 3, 4, and 5) to the east of the farmhouse and farm buildings may be the remains of a moat. This farmstead may have originated as a grange associated with the priory at Chester.
