Summary

Two sandstone quarries operating from the early nineteenth century into the mid twentieth centuries. The southern of the two quarries is now a carpark and visitor centre, but an extensive spoil tip survives as an earthwork on the adjacent valley side.

Plot 3 is recorded in the accompanying award as a stone allotment.

A quarry is depicted on this map. The working face appears to be north-eastern side. A crane is nearby and a short tramway connects this area to buildings in the eastern corner adjacent to Old Buxton Road.

The quarry has expanded to the north-east and slightly to the east in the south-eastern corner. An additional building is located here, and a further building between this building and the existing buildings. A further quarry has been established in the former garden of Windyway House (see CHER 5249). This quarry contains one larger building, two smaller ones, and a crane. They are labelled Windyway Quarries.

The southern quarry has expanded considerably. A new large building is located adjacent to Saddler's Way. A tramway connects a number of buildings and runs from the quarry workings to the south-east along a large spoil tip on the valley side.

The southern quarry appears to be still in use. The northern quarry is disused.
