An area of earthworks visible on this aerial photograph. These comprise a regular L-shaped positive earthwork c.50m x c.30m and a negative linear earthwork c.5m wide and defining on three sides a square area c.60m x 70m.

The tithe map depicts a long rectangular pond at the western limit of the formal gardens associated with the later hall (see CHER 262). The plot is called Hall Barn Field.

<5> Ormerod, G., 1882, The History of the County Palatine and City of Chester, Vol.II p.284 (Book). SCH1389.

‘The antient hall of Calveley was pulled down between twenty and thirty years ago. The rooms were large and lofty, and the whole was surrounded by a brick wall with loop holes. There was no appearance of any moat at the time of its demolition’.

<6> Various, Various, Oral communication to the HER, Edwards R, 03/01/2020 (Oral Communication). SCH2330.

It is possible that the regular L-shaped positive earthwork is the house platform for the earlier hall. The other features may be a moat associated with an even earlier hall or the remains of a formal garden, with the large pond originally a reflecting pond.
