Summary

Historic maps depict a brickworks with its associated kilns and workings at this location. The original buildings and workings were located at the southern end of the site, but these moved north as the nineteenth century progressed.

Full Description

<1> See map for surveyor, c.1837-51, Cheshire Tithe Maps and Awards, EDT 64/2, 1848 (Maps and Plans). SCH3266.

The tithe map for Brereton cum Smethwick depicts a rectangular structure with an associated rectangular plot (398) which is described as a ‘tile yard and shed’. The surrounding plot (397), which is in the same ownership, is called ‘Boosey Pasture and Pits’.

The features depicted on the tithe map (see 1) are no longer extant. However, to the immediate north is a brick field comprising two kilns and a small rectangular building. A further large building is located at the northern end of the site spanning the field boundary into the next field.

The brick field has expanded into the field to the north. An additional kiln has been constructed next to the large building. The site is labelled ‘brick works’.

The two southern brick kilns depicted on (2) are no longer extant. Two brick kilns are depicted next to the large building.

The buildings associated with the brick works are still extant. The workings have expanded further to the north.

All buildings have been demolished. The workings have reverted to farmed pasture.
