Summary

A grey stone axe-hammer was found in gravel delivered from Church Lawton to Porthill, Staffordshire. The hole in the centre, meant to hold a wooden or bone handle, has not been completed.

Full Description

<1> Ordnance Survey, 1870-1982, Ordnance Survey Archaeological Record Card, SJ 85 NW 6 (Index). SCH2487.

A greystone axe, with unfinished perforation was found in Nov 1931 at Porthill Staff [SJ 5449] in gravel taken from Lawton Cheshire [SJ 8155]. The implement is in Hanley Museum (see 2). [BRS 23/11/1962].

Sandpits were in operation in 1931 at SJ 8052 6524 and SJ 8070 5655, but no information was obtained concerning a gravel pit. [Waggot T.P. 10/09/1964].

The museum index card illustrates an axe-hammer with an incomplete central perforation. [ White J.H. 11/09/1064].

The nearest operational quarry to Church Lawton is the sand pit at SJ 8038 5531 near Alsager.
