Summary

The site of a possible natural saline spring which may have incorporated a bath to allow bathing. Saline spring water was considered a cure for various illnesses, either by bathing or by drinking, during the eighteenth century.

Full Description

The 1841 tithe map for Betchton depicts a small circular feature adjacent to a natural watercourse. The feature is labelled Spa and the field is named in the award as Near Spa-well Meadow. The adjacent field (to the north-west) is named Far Spa-well Meadow.

Possibly a natural saline spring used for bathing. The spring water was reputedly a cure for various illnesses, either by bathing or by drinking, during the eighteenth century. See Spurstow Spa for comparison (CHER 372 & CHER 308/1). The site of the spa is occupied by a water treatment works by the late 1940s (see 4).
