Summary

Chorley Mill was first mention in documents dating from 1305, but isn't depicted on any maps dating from nineteenth century, though one building is depicted here on the 1842 tithe map. A wide bank is visibal at ninety degrees to the course of the brook on an aerial photograph dating from the mid to late 1940s, and this has been interpreted as the remains of the mill ponds dam. The building, possibly part of the mill, miller's house, or a successor, was demolished sometime between 1945 and 1971. It is probable that the mill had ceased to function as such well before 1842.

<5> The GeoInformation Group, 2005, 1940s RAF Aerial Photographs from Operation Review (Aerial Photograph). SCH4608.

A wide linear earthwork (c.14m wide) aligned at ninety degrees to the course of the stream is visible. The building identified in sources (3) and (4) is also visible and would be located on any continuation of the bank on the eastern side of the brook.

<6> Various, Various, Oral communication to the HER, Edwards R, 04/08/2016 (Oral Communication). SCH2330.

The earthwork identified in (6) is a possible mill dam. The position of the building to one side of the dam is consistent with other medieval and early post medieval mills in Cheshire. The absence of information such a labelling or plot details on sources (3) and (4) suggests that the mill had ceased to function as such well before 1842.

<7> Huntings Surveys Ltd, 1971-1973, 1971-1973 County Survey (Aerial Photograph). SCH4881.

The possible mill building has been demolished.
