Summary

A complex of earthworks visible on aerial photogrpahs, LIDAR and Ordnance Survey maps which have been interpreted as a medieval moat. It has been suggested that many, if not all, these features are associated with drainage and or water management. However, some of the earthworks are located within Old House Meadow, which may indicate settlement remains.

<2> Various, Various, Oral communication to the HER, Tindal, A 1998 (Oral Communication). SCH2330.

Site visit suggests these features are to do with water management.

<3> Ordnance Survey, 1871-1882, Ordnance Survey County Series (Epoch 1) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ7050, 1876-1877 (Maps and Plans). SCH2462.

The outline of the possible moat platform earthworks is respected on it's north-western and south-western sides by field boundaries. The north-eastern arm seems to survive and connects to a probable pond at it's north-western end. The pond corresponds to one of the earthworks depicted on (1).

<4> Ordnance Survey, 1896-1898, Ordnance Survey First Revision County Series (Epoch 2) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ7050, 1898 (Maps and Plans). SCH3848.

Two possible moat arms are depicted connecting to the pond depicted on (3). A sluice is also depicted.

<5> The GeoInformation Group, 2005, 1940s RAF Aerial Photographs from Operation Review (Aerial Photograph). SCH4608.

The pond and possible moat arms are clearly visible on this aerial photograph. Further earthworks of indeterminate function are visible to the east and north-east.
