Full Description

Two quarries are depicted on Ordnance Survey maps dating from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Structures, including a smithy and crane, and tramways are depicted at both the northern and southern quarries (1, 2 & 3).

The Tithe Maps for Sutton Downes and Macclesfield do not depict any quarries. The northern quarry is located in an area of fields (Macclesfield) whose land use is recorded in the accompanying Tithe Award as pasture. A small structure and access road is depicted in the area of the southern quarry (Sutton Downes), but the Tithe Award records no land use (4 & 5).

The two quarries have effectively merged into one quarry by the late 1940s.(6).

Appear to be disused by the early 1970s (7).
