Full Description
<1> Ordnance Survey, 1893-96, Ordnance Survey County Series (Epoch 1) 25 inch to 1 mile - Lancashire, SJ4984, 1893 (Maps and Plans). SCH3847.
The Liver Alkali Works are depicted on this map of 1893. The alkali works is located on both sides of Ditton Road, though the main complex is located to the south of the road. The alkali works has good connections to the L&NWR Garston and Warrington line (to the south) and the Sheffield and Midland Joint Railway (to the north). There are two large gasometers on the western side of the southern part of the works. A further gasometer is located in the northern part of the works.
<2> Ordnance Survey, 1907-8, Ordnance Survey First Revision County Series (Epoch 2) 25 inch to 1 mile - Lancashire, SJ4984, 1907 (Maps and Plans). SCH7233.
The northern gasometer is labelled as disused.
<3> Ordnance Survey, 1927-1928, Ordnance Survey Second Revision County Series (Epoch 3) 25 inch to 1 mile - Lancashire, SJ4984, 1927 (Maps and Plans). SCH5041.
The alkali works is no longer extant. There is no trace of the northern part of the works, which now appears to form part of a possible industrial tip. The only surviving structures on the southern part of the site are the two gasometers and some of the railway sidings. The area is in use as a timber yard.
<4> The GeoInformation Group, 2005, 1940s RAF Aerial Photographs from Operation Review, 106G UK 626? (Aerial Photograph). SCH4608.
The eastern gasometer is larger than previously depicted (see 3) suggesting that this is a replacement.
<5> Board of Trade, 1867-1916, Companies Registration Office: Files of Dissolved Companies: Company No: 3703; Liver Alkali Works Company Ltd, BT 31/1360/3703 (Legal Document). SCH8131.
The Liver Alkali Works Company Ltd was incorporated in 1867 and dissolved before 1916.
<6> Various, Various, Oral communication to the HER, Edwards R, 17/01/2017 (Oral Communication). SCH2330.
The Liver Alkali Works Company Ltd merged with a large number of chemical producers in 1890 to form the United Alkali Company. It's possible that the two larger gasometers located on the west are not part of the alkali works.
