Summary

The Runcorn to Latchford Canal was built to bypass shallow sections of the River Mersey and opened in 1804. It was superseded by the Manchester Ship Canal (built from 1887 and opened 1894), which, in places, followed its course. At Moss Side, part of the original canal survives as an earthwork.
