Summary

The site of a watermill with probable medieval origins. Historic Ordnance Survey maps depict the mill, the attached mill house and an outbuilding to the south-west of the main range of buildings. The mill pond was located to the immediate north-east, curving to the east. It has largely silted up by the late nineteenth century. A sluice and overflow leat were located at the northern of the mill dam. The head race was enclosed and the tail race emerged to the west of the mill. The mill is labelled ‘Gawsworth Mill (Corn). Only the mill house survives. The brook now flows to the south of the mill site, having breached the dam which survives as an earthwork. The mill pond is now drained.

The maps all show the mill one mile west of the village, but a medieval mill site may also have been possible under the dam of the lower fishpond opposite the church.
