Monument record 7993/2 - Styperson Quarries

Summary

Stone quarries located within Styperson Park producing a stone known as Styperson Blue which was commonly used for paving, but also for sculpture. The stone was transported a short distance from the quarry to a sawmill adjacent to the Macclesfield Canal for cutting, prior to transportation. Small scale quarrying within the park appears to have occurred in the north-western part of the park, but by 1850 a large quarry had been established in the north-eastern and eastern area. This quarry continued to expand through the nineteenth century into the twentieth century, though expansion in the latter appears to have been more limited. The quarry may have been still in use in the early 1970s, though by the early 1990s, the quarry had been abandoned.
