<1> Bott O J P, 1983, Cornmill sites in Cheshire 1066-1850 Part 2, p.53 (Article in Journal). SCH6105.

Site of a watermill. This appears to be one of the many King’s mills sold by James I. Earliest documentary references date from the mid twelfth century (1154-60).

<2> Burdett, P. P., 1777, A Survey of the County Palatine of Chester (Maps and Plans). SCH113.

Although this map depicts Grange Mill to the south-west, it does not depict a watermill at this location.

<3> Swire, W. & Hutchings, W. F., 1830, Map of the County Palatine of Chester (Maps and Plans). SCH2116.

This map depicts a watermill at this location.

<4> Bryant, A., 1831, Map of the County Palatine of Chester (Maps and Plans). SCH2114.

This map depicts a watermill and a mill pond at this location.

<5> See map for surveyor, c.1837-51, Cheshire Tithe Maps and Awards, EDT 249/2, 1844 (Maps and Plans). SCH3266.

This map clearly depicts a tear shaped mill pond, but the mill building is less clearly defined, probably the unshaded building to the north-west. The plot is described as corn mill and mill pool.

<6> Ordnance Survey, 1871-1882, Ordnance Survey County Series (Epoch 1) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ6086, 1877-1888 (Maps and Plans). SCH2462.

The mill pond is largely constrained by the surrounding roads. The mill building is clear depicted to the north-west. A tail race runs north-west from the building to join the over-flow leat, located to the west of the mill, after c.60m. The mill pond is labelled and the mill is labelled Walton Mill (Flour).

<7> Ordnance Survey, 1896-1898, Ordnance Survey First Revision County Series (Epoch 2) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ6086, 1898 (Maps and Plans). SCH3848.

The mill is labelled Walton Mill (Corn). Construction of the Manchester Ship Canal, and the associated Lower Walton Wharf, has necessitated the creation of (probable) culverts for the tail race and overflow leat.

<8> Ordnance Survey, 1909-1912, Ordnance Survey Second Revision County Series (Epoch 3) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ6086, 1910 (Maps and Plans). SCH4361.

The mill is labelled Walton Mill (Flour).

<9> The GeoInformation Group, 2005, 1940s RAF Aerial Photographs from Operation Review (Aerial Photograph). SCH4608.

Neither the mill building or mill pond are visible on this aerial photograph. The pond may survive as an earthwork.
