Summary

Winwick Lock and spillway located at the northern end of St.Helens Canal. It comprised the canal lock, overflow weir and lock keepers cottage and was still in use in the late 1940s, however the lock keepers cottage had been demolished by then. The canal and locks had been infilled by the mid 1980s. The St.Helens Canal was the first artificial waterway in England. It was built to carry coal from St Helens to the Mersey and then onto Liverpool and opened in 1757.

Full Description

Winwick Lock and spillway, St.Helens Canal, North end. Condition - Fair (1).

The lock, overflow weir and lock keepers cottage are clearly depicted on the 1893 Ordnance Survey map (2).

Still in use in the late 1940s, however the lock keepers cottage has been demolished (3).

The canal and locks had been infilled by the mid 1980s (4).
