Summary

Historic aerial photographs record the site of a Second World War searchlight battery. The battery comprised three circular earthworks in which the projectors (searchlights) and the predictors (which located the enemy aircraft) were positioned. Nearby were huts for generators and crew.

Searchlight battery in Delamere. Manned by 352 Company of 38 (The King's Regiment) AA Battalion RE. It was in Section 9, Number 21. It was part of the Liverpool defences and is part of a much larger distribution that covered large areas of Cheshire, some of which are shown as part of this group.

This aerial photograph depicts two adjacent circular earthworks c.15m in diameter and a further circular earthwork, c.20m in diameter, c.40m to the north-west. Also visible is a small, c.50m diameter, earthwork and a comprex of c.10 buildings.

The site doesn't follow the classic clover leaf layout. It is possible that the larger circular earthwork housed a 1500mm projector and the twin earthworks housed paired predictors. Other features include a LMG position for air defence and huts for accomodation, generators etc.

This site was first identified as a single ring-ditch like cropmark. It was recorded as CSMR 2963, a a ring ditch/hengiform monument with two opposed entrances.
