Summary

Historic maps show that the lane from Nantwich Road to Wimboldsley Grange (formerly Twelve Acres) originally curved to the south joining Nantwich Road near Hopley House. The lane ultimately continued west to a medieval crossing point of the River Weaver. The line of the lane survives as an archaeological feature which can been seen as a cropmark.

Full Description

This map depicts the original course of the lane between Wimboldsley Grange (formerly Twelve Acres) and Nantwich Road. The lane originally curved to the south joining Nantwich Road near Hopley House.

The lane is clearly visible as an earthwork and forms part of a wider landscape of relict field boundaries and agricultural earthworks.

The earliest reference to Twelve Acres Farm dates from 1831 (see 5 & 6). The lane may be contemprenous with the farm, but it does connect with the "Wooden Bridge" depicted on Bryant's map (see 5) and which crossed the River Weaver at SJ67226298. This crossing point is thought to have medieval origins (see 6).

The earliest reference to Twelve Acre Farm dates from 1831, when its is depicted on Bryant's Map of the County Palatine of Chester (5). The Wooden Bridge, which is also depicted on this map, may be the pons de Wynbaldeslegh (1309) and Wartons Bridge (1619) mentioned in documentary sources.
