Full Description

A pair of sandstone gatepiers, probably late seventeenth century, stand on the line of the approach to the formal garden (see 327/3/1) (1). They may mark the teminus of a long tree lined avenue which approached the house from the south, depicted on Burdett's 1777 Map of Cheshire, in the area of Marl Piece and Moss Wood (2). The flanking ditches to the avenue are clearly visible as earthworks on aerial photographs dating from the 1940s (3). And as cropmarks on aerial photographs dating from the 1970s (4). A small number of trees, which may have been part of the avenue, survive within the park (5).
