Monument record 816 - Earthwork enclosure in Wimboldsley Parish

Please read our .

Summary

A large irregular earthwork enclosure with a strong bank and ditch, and a smaller rectangular enclosure are shown on aerial photographs dating from the late 1940s. The boundary for the larger enclosure follows the 45m contour, except where it is weakest on the south eastern side which crosses the top of the slight promontory. It may be an Iron Age enclosure or an early medieval or medieval assart (A piece of land cleared of trees for cultivation). No earthworks seem to survive to the east of the late nineteenth century field boundary which almost bisects the site north-south. However, slight earthworks may survive to the west.

Full Description

<1> Ordnance Survey, 1870-1982, Ordnance Survey Archaeological Record Card, SJ66 SE3 1971 (Index). SCH2487.

A large, irregular enclosure earthwork of strong bank and ditch; intact in northern half, but diminishing in south-west and gone completely in south-east, though course is clear on aerial photographs (see 2). There is some slight mutilation on east side where a small rectangular annexe, or enclosure, has been added but is now gone. The feature is patently earlier than the surrounding, and covering, rig and furrow. Superficially, it has an Iron Age look about it, but the site, on a barely perceptible knoll in the bend of the River Weaver, is not strong. Probably an enclosure; early medieval or earlier.

The boundary for the larger enclosure follows the 45m contour (see 4), except where it is weakest on the south eastern side which crosses the top of the slight promontory. The east of the late nineteenth century field boundary which crosses the enclosure, the aerial photograph may be showing soil marks rather than earthworks.
