Summary

A mid nineteenth century dye works and silk mill located between Hatton Street and Armitt Street. It is uncertain as to whether this was a works creating dyes for use in the local textile industry or a works for the dying of fabric (in this case silk).

Full Description

This map depicts a complex of buildings and structures which are labelled as Hatton Street Dye Works (Silk).

This map depicts the Hatton Street Dye Works (Silk) occupying an area between Hatton Street and Armitt Street, with housing to the immediate north-east and open ground to the south-west. The main building is located on the north-eastern side of the site with a large open structure to its immediate south-west. The presence of a sluice on one side of this structure may suggest it is a tank or reservoir of some sort. Further smaller buildings are located to the north-west and south-east of the main building.

The site is clearly visible on this aerial photograph dating from the 1940s. The buildings visible clearly correspond with those visible or depicted on later aerial photographs and maps (see 6-9). The main building depicted on earlier maps also appears to be extant. A long shadow located at the corner of this building indicates the existence of a tall chimney at this time.
