Summary

Cropmarks interpreted as three sides of a recangular enclosure. Further invesitigation has revealed further cropmarks which indicate that these features formed part of an earlier field system.

Full Description

<1> Higham N J, 1984-9, Professor Nick Higham's Aerial Photographs, 1984/2/10a & J87/1/24 (Aerial Photograph). SCH7659.

Photograph J87/1/24 appears to show a large rectangular banked enclosure adjacent to the lane leading to Spodegreen Farm. Photograph 1984/2/10a shows further associated linear earthworks in the wider area.

Large rectangular enclosure recorded from the air. Possible relationship with the adjacent kiln croft site (CHER 2746).

Field survey undertaken in 1991 observed this feature to be in the '…form of a depression c.4m wide which runs to a gateway in the north-south hedgeline, suggesting that it may be an earlier trackway…'.

Cropmarks depicting a semi regular pattern of possible ditches are visible on this aerial image.

These cropmarks generally correspond with field boundaries depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition of 1877 (see 6).
