Full Description
<1> Cheshire and Chester Archives and Local Studies Centre, 1787, Lease by Richard Wilbraham Bootle of Rode Esq, DBW/G/B/3 (Unpublished Document). SCH8666.
Lease of 1787 refers to a Water Corn mill with stable in Bruen Stapleford called Stapleford Lower Mill. Leased to Richard Howell of Foulke Stapleford by Richard Wilbraham Bootle of Rode Hall.

Stapleford Mill marked as a water mill on this map of 1831.

Tithe map of 1838 records 'House, Mill,Garden, Outbuildings and Yard' owned by Randle Wilbraham and occupied by Late Joseph Howell's Executors. The mill building appears in the centre of a watercourse, possibly the original route of the Gowy. Small buildings to the NE and SE are also shown.

Stapleford Mill ( flour) marked on the OS 1st edition map. Building shown across a watercourse on a small island of land. Building and garden show to the north-east of the mill building. Mill race runs from Ford bridge to Stapelford mill before rejoining the river to the north.

Buildings shown in locations shown on OS historic maps. Watercourse to the mill site from the ford bridge appears to be dried up.

Norris records Hockenhall mill at SJ482 650 which is the location of Stapleford Mill as shown on the historic OS maps. The description iss:
Hockenhull : Now only a site, the building having been pulled down about 1950 and the machinery having been removed during the last war, not having worked since the first world war.

Building to the NE of the watermill has developed into a large house and gardens. Structures appear to survive in the location of the mill buildings and additional buildings to the SE. Watercourse from bridge to the mill is dried up.

A mill at Bruen Stapleford is first mentioned around 1219 as 'molendinum de Stepelford'.
