Monument record 15724 - Agricultural Earthworks Adjacent to the River Weaver

Please read our .

Summary

An extensive area of earthworks in the area between the River Weaver and the A530. Blocks of parallel linear earthworks in the form of distinct ridges and troughs known as ridge and furrow formed by medieval and early post medieval cultivation practices. In places the ridge and furrow is very narrow and regular suggesting nineteenth century steam ploughing. Steam ploughing is where a plough drawn between two steam traction engines, or a traction engine and a moveable windlass, standing on opposite headlands. These features are associated with the earthwork remains of former field boundaries and marl pits.

An extensive area of earthworks in the area between the River Weaver and the A530. Blocks of parallel linear earthworks in the form of distinct ridges and troughs known as ridge and furrow formed by medieval and post medieval cultivation practices. In places the ridge and furrow is very narrow and regular suggesting nineteenth century steam ploughing. These features are associated with the earthwork remains of former field boundaries and marl pits. The LIDAR survey suggests that the earthworks are better preserved adjacent to the river and in the area between Leighton Grange and the road.
