Monument record 2593/1 - Bachehouse Mill and Pool

Please read our .

Summary

A late eighteenth or early nineteenth century watermill referred to in documentary sources initially as a bone mill, then a flour mill, and then a corn mill. The mill was served by a large mill pond known as Bachehouse Pool. The mill building was demolished sometime in the mid twentieth century, though the mill pond, dam, and the associated overflow weir survive. It is probable that below ground archaeological remains associated with the mill building survive adjacent to the dam and lane.

This map depicts a large and somewhat sinuous, where if follows the natural watercourse, pond c.500m long and c.130m wide. The dam to the mill pond is located to the south-east of Bache House. The lane to Bache House either runs along the top or the base of the mill dam. The mill is depicted on the south-eastern side of the dam. The map depicts the overflow leat on the north-eastern side of the mill pond and the tail race, which joins it next to the mill building. It is described as a bone mill.

This map depicts a further sluice and leat at the northern end of the mill pond. The mill building is labelled Bachehouse Mill (Flour). The mill pond is labelled Bachehouse Pool.

<7> Ordnance Survey, 1896-1898, Ordnance Survey First Revision County Series (Epoch 2) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ6154, 1898 (Maps and Plans). SCH3848.

An overflow weir has been constructed to the immediate south of the mill building. It appears to have replaced the original overflow leat and the later sluice and leat depicted on the 1875-1877 map (see 6). The mill is labelled as a corn mill.

<8> Ordnance Survey, 1909-1912, Ordnance Survey Second Revision County Series (Epoch 3) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ6154, 1910 (Maps and Plans). SCH4361.

As previously depicted.

The mill pond is either drained or heavily silted up. Tree growth obscures the location of the mill building.

Much of the mill pond is waterfilled and the overflow weir first depicted on the 1898 map (see 7) is clearly visible. The mill building has been demolished, but its footprint can be discerned.
