Abstract/Summary

A survey of mills in East Cheshire, the centre of the silk industry in England. The authors have established that the factory system, and the architecture associated with it pre-dated by a generation the more widely known factories of Richard Arkwright and others. This book goes beyond just looking at the factories but also includes the houses, landscapes and communities generated by the industry.
