Summary

Grade II listed Mill with external waterwheel which shows evidence for at least three different waterwheel positions. Built in the late 18th century and extended in the early and mid 19th century this three story building has been a corn mill, a silk mill and finally a flint grinding mill. Last used in 1973. Marked on 1st edition OS 6" (1881-82) and 25" (1875) maps of Cheshire.

Full Description

The waterwheel was housed externally and shows evidence for at least three different waterwheel positions. The latest was cast iron and of the Poncelet type. Remained operational until 1973 (1). Built in the late C18th and extend in the early and mid C19th. Comprises three storeys and an attic. Has been a corn mill, a silk mill and finally a flint grinding mill. Floors of heavy wooden cross beams. The ground storey contains a complete set of flint grinding machinery last used in 1975. First mentioned in 1828 when it housed a silk throwsters, passing subsequently, in 1864, to William Webberly flint, stone and bone grinder and by 1883 by Ford and son, potter’s material manufacturer (2).
