Summary

Stone built mill used for cotton spinning for candlewicks for miners lamps. Built in 1835. A dam above the mill supplied water to a storage reservoir alongside mill. The first mention of a mill on this site is from 1798. A stem engine was added in 1815 then burnt down in 1822 and then rebuilt. Rebuilt in 1823-4 with 2 storeys at front and 3 at back. At the east end ain iron overshot waterwheel, twinned with a double-action condensing beam engine added around 1840. It is one of the last examples where water and steam power used together with machinery surviving intact.

Full Description

Stone built mill used for cotton spinning for candlewicks. Dated 1835. Dam above the mill supplied water to storage reservoir alongside mill. Contains 19th C steam engine by J & E Armfield, New Mills. Photos in PP SMR- file no. P8016 (1). First mention of mill on this site in land tax recs of 1798. Mill sold in 1815 and extended from 2 to 4 storeys and steam engine added. Burnt down in 1822. Rebuilt in 1823-4 with 2 storeys at front and 3 at back. Candlewicks for miners lamps produced in 19th C by the Sheldon family who still own the mill (2). Candlewick Mill, late 18th C origins but major rebuilding c.1830. Sandstone rubble & stone slate roof, 3- storeys. Beam engine house with Cornish boiler. Ground & 1st floors fire damaged. At E end is 26ft diam iron overshot waterwheel, twinned with a double-action condensing beam engine added c.1840. Last eg where water & steam power used together & machinery survives intact (3).
