Full Description

The mill was built in 1859 and extended, in almost identical style, in the 1870’s. The mill was originally known as foundry mill. The firm of Berisfords (est. 1858) took over the mill for powered ribbon weaving. The mill is characterised by a high spacious and well-lit top storey, possibly for weaving with Jacquard looms. It had a king post truss roof, with light small-sectioned timbers and cast iron columns as intermediate floor supports. The windows were tall, in order to light the increased room heights. A free standing North-light shed was located away from the mill structure (1). ON OS 1st ed. Maps (2 & 3). This site is where Isaac Beresford started in business. The firm now has modern premises in Brook Street to the north (4).
