Full Description
George and William Reade built the mill was for spinning cotton in 1785 by. It was probably constructed in response to Arkwrights Patent Annulment to house water frames. Originally water powered, but steam power added by 1821. Ultimately amalgamated with Brook Mills to form an extensive silk spinning site. One of only three sites at which silk spinning took place in Congleton, in the mid C19th. Although the Reade family sold out to the Solly family in 1852, the company name was retained and Reade & Co. remained in production there until 1927. Unusually, the toilets at the mill are situated at the centre of the stairwells.
