Summary

Former fustian cutting shop known as Hawthorn Street Mill. It was started by Mr. Clare, after Bollin Walk, in 1900, and worked by the Platt family between 1910-20. It is two storeys high with large rectangular windows. Fustian is a mixed fibre cloth of linen, cotton and sometimes silk. It is woven in such a way that the surface can be cut to produce a nap. Cutting was originally done by hand and the cutter needed to walk up and down the room all day. The rooms used for this process needed a long floor space and substantial flooring.
