Summary

The mill was constructed prior to 1775 and has now been demolished. The mill was located near to Congleton Bridge and was powered initially by a water wheel, with additional power later supplied by a steam engine. The arrival of the silk industry in the 1750's brought new prosperity and growth to Congleton with up to thirty four mills operating in the town using the River Dane & Howty Brook.

Full Description

The mill was constructed prior to 1775 and has now been demolished. The building was four storeys high, 84’ long and 27’ wide. The mill room was 11’ high (3.3m); this is a high ceiling for a C18th mill and is not a requirement of the machinery. The first Engine room was 7’2" high, the second 7’4". The uppermost/doublers room was 8’ high. Buildings adjoining the mill were used as two weaving rooms, suggesting the integration of weaving on site by 1811. The mill was located near to Congleton Bridge and was powered initially by a water wheel, with additional power later supplied by a steam engine.
