Summary

An early nineteenth century paper mill established in the 1820s or 1830s , possibly on the site of an earlier watermill. By 1872 the mill had been repurposed and expanded (or rebuilt) as a bleach works, producing bleach for the area's textile industry. The works operated into the early twentieth century, but had been demolished by 1935.

Full Description

The mill is depicted on this map and labelled Paper Mill. It appears to have been powered by the tail race from the nearby print works . The award is described by a paper works and house occupied by Symonds Cuncliffe and Co.

The works is depicted and similar in extent to the works depicted on the 1844 tithe map. However a large north-east to south-west aligned building located between the main works building and Manchester Road is no longer extant. Labelled Handforth Bleach Works.

The bleach works has expanded south to, and along, the river.

The bleach works is labelled as disused. The main factory building and associated smaller buildings are no longer extant. A building against the northern boundary of the site survives. A new building is located directly adjacent to Manchester Road.
