Summary

Grade II listed pedimented 19th Century Silk Mill. The only complete surviving example of the seven pedimented (has a triangular gable in the centre) silk mills built in Macclesfield between 1811 and 1831. It is brick built with hipped stone flagged roof. It is 17 bays long with a projecting, pedimented central section. There is a Clock in the apex of the pediment. It operated as an integrated silk site by the late 1820's, including manufacture, throwing, weaving and dyeing. It then became a card factory and finally a joinery works. Macclesfield was one of two silk production centres in Cheshire. Silk buttons had been made here since Elizabethan times. Silk throwing (Twisting silk threads together) began as a domestic industry and became a mechanised process with the use of water powered machinery in the mid 18th century. The industrial revolution introduced power weaving in the late 19th century and many large mills were built at this time.
