Summary

Grade II listed Textile Mill. It was between 1840 and 1860 . It is the twin in plan and scale to Albion Mill. It was built with strengthened flooring, supported by cast iron columns to compensate for the vibration of powerlooms. It is a four storey red brick building on a rubble stone basement. Giant pilasters topped by stone finials mark the angles and two towers project from the rear, housing the stairs. Macclesfield was one of two silk production centres in Cheshire. Silk buttons had been made here since Elizabethan times. Silk throwing (Twisting silk threads together) began as a domestic industry and became a mechanised process with the use of water powered machinery in the mid 18th century. The industrial revolution introduced power weaving in the late 19th century and many large mills were built at this time.
