Summary

Grade II listed house which was formerly a post office and post masters house with village hall on top storey. It was originally the offices of Crag works (water powered carpet works). The Crag Works, of which the Old Post Office is the only surviving part, was built as a water- powered carpet works; it was built with Crag Hall before 1819. Shown on maps by Greenwood (1819), Bryant (1831) and the Tithe Map (1849). The house was built in the mid 19th century of coursed sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and a stone-slate roof with coped gables and gable chimneys. There is a steep bank to the right with external stone steps and causeway giving access to the upper storey.

Full Description

Site of silk mill with admin buildings. House formerly post office and post masters house with village hall on top storey. Originally offices of Crag works (water powered carpet works). Photos in PP SMR - film no:33; 11-13 (1). Built after 1848 (3). House, formerly post office and postmaster's house with village hall on upper storey; originally offices of Crag Works, early 19th C with 3-storey porch probably mid 19th C. Coursed sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and stone-slate roof with coped gables and gable chimneys. 3-storeys, 7 windows with central 3-storey porch capped with an open Doric pediment. Steep bank to right with external stone steps and causeway giving access to upper storey (former loading door blocked). The Crag Works, of which the Old Post Office is the only surviving part, was built as a water- powered carpet works; it was built with Crag Hall before 1819.
