Summary

Silk mill built around 1825. Three storeys hight it is brick built on a stone plinth, with a Welsh slate and stone flagged roof. The internal structure of transverse wooden beams on cast iron and wooden columns.It was used as a sugar store in the Second World War and it is now used for offices and commercial use. Macclesfield was one of two silk production centres in Cheshire. Silk buttons had been made here since Elizabethan times. Silk throwing (Twisting silk threads together) began as a domestic industry and became a mechanised process with the use of water powered machinery in the mid 18th century. The industrial revolution introduced power weaving in the late 19th century and many large mills were built at this time.

Full Description

Silk mill built around 1825. Brick built, in English Garden Wall and Flemish bonds, on stone plinth, with Welsh slate and stone flagged roof. 3 storeys and 13 bays, with former engine house and chimney at rear. Original pattern of openings modified on conversion, with addition of 4 entrances in moulded stone architraves. Rear elevation has projecting tapered square chimney shaft. Lean-to engine house at base of stack now altered. Internal structure of transverse wooden beams on cast iron and wooden columns. Reconstructed roof of 12 queen post trusses (1). Used as a sugar store in the Second World War, the mill is now used for offices and commercial use. Called Thorp Street Leather Mill by Calladine & Fricker (1 & 2).
