Full Description
The first mention of Waterside Mill is an advertisement of 1820, stating that the wheel of Waterside Mill was "nearly new and iron shrouded". The mill was unusual in that it has a two storied weaving mill, which had a new wing added in 1851. The new wing was extended later. The mill is listed in 1834 as being owned by Moseley and Howard, and using many powered looms. It now makes paper, mainly for the sugar industry. ECTMS 157 (1).
The earliest map the mill is marked on is Bryant (2), although nearby Waterside House is marked on Burdett (3), implying the mill was built between 1777 and 1820.
Historic Ordnance Survey maps show a mill race connected to the River Goyt above a weir. The function of the 'mill pond' to the south of the mill is unclear. Two rows of terraced houses were located to the east of the mill. The northern most terrace has been demolished by 1909 and a sewage works is located to the immediate north of the mill (4, 5 & 6).
In 1851 it was owned by George Heald and occupied by Archibald Vickars (7).
