Full Description
<1> Calladine A & Fricker J, 1993, East Cheshire Textile Mills, p. 57, 162 (Book). SCH1093.
‘…A number of mills built in Macclesfield and Congleton in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries were positioned away from known water sources and have no recorded primary power system…Examples in Congleton are Swan Bank Mill, Square Mill, Wagg Street Mill and Moody Street Mill. As far as is known, all these mills, now demolished, were built for silk throwing, requiring a relatively low power capacity…The dimensions of the demolished sites are recorded on the 1871 Ordnance Survey map…The known dimensions of these mills correspond to those of contemporary powered mills, and it is likely therefore that they were also powered and may well have been driven by horse power…’
<2> Ordnance Survey, 1875, Metric Ten Foot Scale Town Plan of Congleton (Maps and Plans). SCH4541.
Depicted on this map. Now demolished.
