West Wall, Watergate, n.d.: Record of assemblage of Roman tile from near the medieval Watergate, possibly from the Watergate Baths site (29). CHER 8038/1.
South End City Road, various dates: Finds are recorded from the south end of City Road. In 1899, three samian vessels marked ALBI, OF I FIRMI, OF RVF were found near the Bank of Liverpool, City Road. All now in the Grosvenor Museum. In 1920, a further samian vessel marked DAGOMA(RVS) F was found in City Road. In 1983 a large fragment of the foot ring of a South Gaulish samian dish, dated c AD 80-110, was found in the gutter of the slip-road of the City Road roundabout. In 1934, a coin of Trajan (AD 98 - 117) was found. (29). CHER 8030/20
County Hall, various dates: Finds from the site of County Hall include a denarius of Elagabalus. Obv: IMP CAE M AVR AVG P TR P, bust draped and laureate right. Rev: FIDES (PV) BLICA. Found in 1939 (47). A denarius of Septimius Severus was found on the site of County Hall in 1939 and was presented to the Grosvenor Museum. From the same area in 1954, a small quantity of Samian ware of second century date was recovered, including the base of a cup with the stamp CACASl (Cacasus of Lezous). Presented to the Museum (21). Near Heronbridge, n.d.: A sestertius from the rule of Hadrian (AD 117 - 138). The obverse has a bust of Hadrian, and the reverse has Jupiter seated. It was found in a wood near Heronbridge (7). CHER 8430/4.
Near Heronbridge, n.d.: A copper alloy radiate copy of Carausius (AD 287 - 293) minted in London, with ... NI AVG inscribed on the reverse, and IMP CARAVSIVS [(P F?) AVG] inscribed on the obverse, with the emperor standing right holding spear and globe (12). CHER 8430/19.
Near Eaton Road, n.d.: A denarius of Nero (AD 50 - 68), carrying a picture of Jupiter with a thunderbolt. Found ‘at the side of the road’ (7). CHER 8430/5.
Ebury Place, n.d.: An amount of Roman pottery and a complete bronze fibula were recovered in the plot of land formerly known as Bolland’s Court (now Ebury Place), while it was under cultivation following the demolition of the buildings at Bolland’s Court (13). CHER 8430/12.
Eaton Road, n.d.: A sandstone hypocaust pila is reported to have come from the site of the ‘church institute’, Handbridge, at the corner of Eaton Road and Overleigh Road (7). CHER 8430/16.
Edgar's Field, n.d.: Figure of Cautopates, the Mithraic attendant with the dowsed torch, and was 0.75m tall (without the head). Figure now lost. Said to have been found 'near the river' (6). CHER 8430/24.
Near North Gate, n.d.: Bronze coin, Constantinopolis, AD.330-331, said to have been found near the North Walls of Chester 'about 30 years ago' (24). CHER 8005/6.
St Werburgh, n.d.: Bronze mirror, recorded c7ft below the surface (19). CHER 8088/44.
Vicars Lane, n.d. (prior to 1888): What was described as ‘numerous amounts’ of Roman pottery, which included Samian ware, an antefix, ‘legionary tiles’, marble and glass were found on the property of the Duke of Westminster near Vicar’s Lane, at some time prior to 1888 when their exhibition was reported (2). Freshfields, Woodlands Ave., Parkgate Rd., n.d.: As of Septimius Severus found in the garden of 'Freshfields', Woodlands Ave. (10). CHER 8600/14
Near Wier and Mill, n.d.: A worn bronze coin of Nero, an Antonininanus of Gallenius and a bronze coin of Maxentius were found by the mill, near the wier, at an uncertain date (10). CHER 8430/18.

64 Lache Lane: A Roman, 8 unciae, lead weight, damaged and slightly underweight, in addition to a lead die of uncertain date, were found in a garden at 64 Lache Lane under uncertain, non-archaeological circumstances (10). CHER 8310/5.
Cliveden Road, n.d.: Three, mid-fourth century AE Roman coins from Cliveden Road area, near Circular Drive (10). CHER 8310/7.
Parkgate Road, n.d.: Two coins from the FH Williams collection, recorded as being found on Parkgate Road. One was a Denarius of Faustina and the other was a Denarius of Domitian (AD 81 - 96). (13) CHER 8005/3.

Brook Street (Gaumont Picture Palace), n.d.: Many fragments of first and second century pottery, including some Samian ware, was recovered from the site of the Gaumont Picture Palace, Brook Street, during the 1940s (49). The assemblage represents casual finds by workmen at the site of a non-archaeological intervention, and no other information is available on the context from which it was recovered. The period covered by these sherds dates from the late first to the second half of the second century (35). CHER 8030/35.
Chester, n.d.: Portion of cross-shaft of a wheelhead cross with interlace, stylistically related to the Whitford Cross and dating to between the tenth and eleventh centuries (29). CHER 9013/16
Chester, n.d.: A linen smoother, or a hemispherical glass implement of Viking period, used for pressing seams of linen and presumed to have been found at Chester and was said to be in the Grosvenor Museum (29). CHER 9013/17

Near Commonhall Street, 1850: Centurial stone recorded by C R Smith, stone was inserted into the previous town hall and subsequently lost when it burnt down in 1862 (39). CHER 8088/48
Handbridge, 1851: In 1851, a large Corinthian capital, with silver coin of Trajan beneath it, was found in Handbridge, possibly from the vicinity of the church of St Mary’s without the Walls; the find is discussed in the same context as a later 1885 find in that area, and so is likely from the same general area (39). Nicholas Street, 1852: Record of a long length of wooden pipe, later sold to the Railway Company for sleepers (3). CHER 8042/22.

Chester Castle, 1856: An aureus of Vespasian was found 'in making the foundations of the Castle'. The obverse reads - IMP COES VESP AVG CEN, while the reverse has a figure with an olive branch standing by an altar, and is inscribed PAX AVG. Now lost. St John’s Church, 1864 - 1874: Between 1864 and 1874, a number of Roman period finds are reported from St John's Churchyard, including a silver denarius of Gordian III found in 1874 while digging a grave on the north side of the churchyard, a box tile found at an unspecified location in the yard in 1864, in addition to a lamp with the stamp FORTIS, amphora sherds with graffiti CELERIC, and a sherd of decorated Samian ware said to have come from this location was part of the F H Williams collection (39). Linenhall Street, 1920: mortar floor, c 15cm thick, was found (11). CHER 8038/11.
Grey friars, 1920s: Record of an inhumation burial in a garden near the end of Grey Friars at some time in the 1920s, reported by Mr W J Williams. A coin of Vespasian was discovered with the inhumation suggesting a date of burial to the first century. (29) CHER 8041/1
16 Appleyards Lane, 1930: A stone pine cone was found on the south side of Appleyard's Lane, at No.16, in 1930. It was found c 0.3m below the surface and c 6.9m in advance of the front door of the house. The cone was c.44.5cm high and was probably from a tomb in the Handbridge Cemetery (29). CHER 8385/13.

County School, Handbridge, 1938: During excavations for the foundations of the County School (now Queen’s Park High School), on the south side of Queen’s Park Road in 1938, several fragments of Roman pottery were found, dating broadly to the second century (29). CHER 8430/11.

Handbridge, 1939: A single stamp, bearing the inscription ‘Robt. Foulkes, Chester, 1731’ was discovered at Handbridge in 1939. No further details on the circumstances of its discovery was reported. (13) CHER 11115/5
Roodee Gasworks, 1944: A metal signet ring dated to the 17th to 18th century was discovered from the site of the Chester Gas Company Works on the Roodee in 1944 (13) CHER 11009/7
Lache Lane, 1946: A coin of Constantine I was found in surface soil on Lache Lane in August 1946. The obverse reads CONSTA(N)TINVS AVG, with bust laureate right. The reverse reads PROVIDENTIAE AVG, and depicts a gateway to a camp, surmounted by two globes, with eight-rayed stars between them (13). CHER 8310/11.
1946, Newton Rise: Medieval papal seal recovered from garden at Newton Rise in 1946. The papal seal or bull was approximately 1.5” in diameter and bore the mark of Pope Innocent IV (1243-1254). (13) CHER 11190/15

1978, Heronbridge: Small quantity of medieval material recovered during the cutting of a trench for a 5ft water pipe from the River Dee at Eaton Road. No further details. (20) CHER 11190/18

Eaton Road, 1979: A denarius of Nero was found at the side of Eaton Road in August 1979. The Reverse reads IVPPITER CUSTOS and shows Jupiter seated left, with a thunderbolt and sceptre. The find was reported to the Grosvenor Museum (10). CHER 8430/7.

Chester, 1984: A 14th century penny, issued by the London Mint, was recovered from Chester City in 1984. The Edward III penny is possibly dated to the period 1344-1351. Grosvenor Street, 1985: A sherd of Chester ware was found in Grosvenor St. in 1985 under unspecified circumstances (29). CHER 9013/13.
River Dee, 1988: Three lead items found in close proximity in the bank of River Dee at Handbridge. The finds consist of a lead statuette of Minerva and 2 lead weights, possibly plumb bobs (7). CHER 8600/11.
Old Dee Bridge, 1998: Cremated human bone from mudflats c25m upstreams of bridge.
South Bank, River Dee: At some time in 2000, cremated human remains, without an urn, were found by chance on the southern bank of the River Dee. It is not possible to state whether the remains were in situ (but it is unlikely). Upon analysis, the remains were found to be those of a young adult woman, probably aged between 20 – 25 years, and small fragments of copper slag and a melted iron nail suggest that other items were included in the cremation (26). Near Heronbridge, West of Eaton Road, 2008: A probable coin of Hadrian (AD 117 - 138), probably a dupondius from the mint of Rome, was found by metal detector in 2008 near Heronbridge (12). CHER 8430/20.
Chester, 2008: A small cast lead Viking weight which is rectangular in plan was found at an unspecified location in Chester in 2008. A thin plate of copper alloy moulding that was gilded decorates its upper surface, and the design is of two spirals with an indistinct moulded animal head where the two circles meet. It is likely to be Hiberno-Scandinavian and can be dated to the late eighth to early ninth century. (12). CHER 9013/44.
