Full Description
<1> Thompson Watkin W. T., 1886, Roman Cheshire: A Description of Roman Remains in the County of Chester, p151-152 (Book). SCH2878.
Roman coin hoard recovered from the premises of No.42 in 1858 (adjacent to Mr Welsby's premises and the discovery of Roman structural evidence). The hoard comprised several hundred third brass coins with some silver ones inter mixed. As the coins had become fused together through oxidation, an exact count was impossible, however two portions of the mass were removed and carefully examined comprising 133 coins in total with a date range from Gordian II to Claudius Gothicus (AD 243-270). The hoard was deposited within a black earthenware jar.
<2> Harris, B.E. (ed), 1987, Victoria County History - A History of the County of Chester: Volume I, p160 (Book). SCH3556.
The hoard was recovered at a depth of approximately 3m and 24m west of the street frontage.
<3> Unknown, 1858, The Gentleman's Magazine, 205/2/609-11 (Book). SCH3126.
