Full Description
A small cast lead Viking weight which is rectangular in plan was found at an unspecified location in Chester in 2008. The upper surface has been decorated with a thin plate of copper alloy moulding which has a bright green patina. There is moulding on the top of the copper plate which has been gilded, the remains of which can be seen in the grooves of the decoration. The design is of two spirals with an indistinct moulded animal head where the two circles meet. It is likely to be Hiberno-Scandinavian and can be dated to the late eighth to early ninth century.
