Full Description

This monument refers to two pieces of sandstone, representing the top of shaft and a grave slab with an animal carving, possibly from St Werburgh's, and dating from before c 950 (1). The shaft is a fragment of an elaborately entangled animal carving that appears to be stylistically related to pieces known from Derby, and the small headstone has simple interlacings and an attractive animal 'portrait' (2). Although their findspot is unknown, they was a 'story' that they came from St Werburgh's (2).
