Summary

Documentary sources suggest a bronze palstave (axe) belonging to the Bronze Age was recovered from the west side of Northgate Street Row in the late 19th century, although there is some doubt as to its true origins. The find is currently held by Liverpool Museum.

Full Description

Record of discovery of a bronze palstave from Northgate Street Row (west) near the Chester Cross (formerly at the crossroads of the four major streets of Chester). Said to have been discovered during excavations for shops for Alderman Charles Brown in around 1898, however, there is some debate over its true provenance. Unlikely to have been recovered in situ.

Palstave currently held by Liverpool Museum (1).
