Summary

Discovery of a Roman centurial stone from Pierpoint Lane. Centurial stones mark building activity by a particular army unit, in this case the Abucini. The stone was destroyed in a fire at the Chester Corn Exchange in 1862. The Roman altar was commonly used as a shrine or marker and were frequently found in homes, markets, public buildings and sacred spaces. They are frequently inscribed with a dedication to a deity as well as decorated with carved sculptures.

Full Description

Documentary sources record the discovery of a centurial stone from Commonhall Street in 1849-50. Inscribed > ABVCINI, it was dedicated to the century of Abucinus. The stone was presented to Mr Bayliss, the City surveyor, and held at his office at the Corn Exchange. It was lost following a fire at that building. (1)

The Roman altar was commonly used as a shrine or marker and were frequently found in homes, markets, public buildings and sacred spaces. They are frequently inscribed with a dedication to a deity as well as decorated with carved sculptures. (4)
