Full Description
Four Roman coins were recovered from the Meadows amongst rubble dumped from the Old Market Hall area, central Chester,in the 1960's. (1)
The coins comprised;
1. a bronze dupondius of Vespasian inscribed on the reverse: S (C) Victory advancing left holding inscribed shield. AD71. Diameter: 3.0cm, 13.32 grams. RIC vol II no. 478 p 72.
2. a bronze dupondius of Hadrian inscribed on the reverse: AETERN(ITAS AV)GUSTI SC. Aeternitas standing holding heads of sun and moon. Rome AD 119-121. Diam:2.53 - 2.79cm, 14. 68 grams. RIC vol II no.597 (c) p 417.
3. a bronze of Constantine I. Rev: DN CONSTANTINI MAX AUG VOT/XX in wreath. Thessalonica AD324. Diameter: 1.85cm, 2.16 grams. RIC vol VII no. 123 p 513.
4. a bronze of urbs Roma. Rev: wolf & twins, 2 stars above. Trier AD333-4. Diameter: 1.6- 1. 7cm, 2.21grams. RIC vol VII no. 553 p 218.
