Summary

Finds are recorded from the south end of City Road. In 1899, three Samian ware vessels marked ALBI, OF I FIRMI, OF RVF were found near the Bank of Liverpool, City Road. All now in the Grosvenor Museum. In 1920, a further Samian vessel marked DAGOMA(RVS) F was found in City Road. In 1983 a large fragment of the foot ring of a South Gaulish Samian ware dish, dated between AD 80 - 110, was found in the gutter of the slip-road of the City Road roundabout. In 1934, a coin of Trajan (AD 98 - 117) was found.

Full Description

This monument refers to a number of chance finds, recovered at various times under non-archaeological conditions, in the same area at the south end of City Road. In 1899, three Samian vessels marked ALBI, OF I FIRMI, OF RVF were found near the Bank of Liverpool, City Road. All now in the Grosvenor Museum. In 1920, a further Samian vessel marked DAGOMA(RVS) F was found in City Road (1). In 1934, a coin of Trajan was found. Obv: bust radiate. Rev: spes left, Legends obliterated (2). c1983, a large fragment of the foot ring of a South Gaulish Samian dish Dr l8R, dated cAD 80 - 110, was found in the gutter of the slip-road of the City Road roundabout by Mr A K Whitehouse and retained by him (3).
