Summary

Between 1864 and 1874, a number of Roman period finds are reported from St John's Churchyard, including a silver denarius of Gordian III found in 1874 while digging a grave on the north side of the churchyard, a box tile found at an unspecified location in the yard in 1864, in addition to a lamp with the stamp FORTIS, amphora sherds with graffiti CELERIC, and a sherd of decorated Samian ware said to have come from this location was part of the F H Williams collection.

Full Description

Between 1864 and 1874, a number of Roman period finds are reported from St John's Churchyard, including a silver denarius of Gordian III found in 1874 while digging a grave on the north side of the churchyard (2), a box tile found at an unspecified location in the yard in 1864 (3), in addition to a lamp with the stamp FORTIS (2), amphora sherds with graffiti CELERIC (2,4), and a sherd of decorated Samian ware said to have come from this location was part of the F H Williams collection (5).
