Description

Nantwich Conservation Area is centred on its historic core, with the parish church of St Mary and the Nantwich Bridge across the River Weaver at its centre where the routes of Hospital Street, Welsh Row, Beam Street and many others converge on High Street. It encompasses the former Mediaeval croft land at North Crofts and South Crofts, the site of the former Corn Mill beside the River Weaver, the areas of Grocotts Row and Pall Mall and the site of the former Maisterson’s Hall/Elm House. Its outer limits are defined by the presence of Almshouses at the end of these three main routes into town, founded by the Wright, Crewe and Wilbraham gentry close to their edge of town late and post Mediaeval mansion houses. It was originally designated a conservation area by the former Cheshire County Council over a quarter of a century ago on 4th December 1969 and its boundary was amended by them before local government re-organization in 1973 and again by Cheshire East Borough Council in 2012.
