Full Description
In 1870 George Wilbraham built (almost opposite his residence) four parallel rows of wooden shops or stalls called 'The York Buildings' on Welsh Row, for the holding of a cloth fair (1). Before the establishment of this market area, cloth merchants had visited Nantwich during the 'Great Fair' and at the Christmas Rag Fair, and sold their wares via street stalls (1). In 1783 the tolls and rents received from stallage amounted to 34 pounds, fifteen shillings and 9d (1). The site is now occupied by the present Primitive Methodist Chapel (2).
